Hanoi has been influenced by the local Vietnamese culture as well as that of the various colonial powers that once occupied it. The Chinese had control over the city at various points in history, and some of their cultural influences are evident. The French were colonial rulers of Vietnam for quite some time, and thus, their influence can also be seen here. Traditional forms of art such as theatre and dances all coexist here with modern trappings such as large shopping centres and entertainment venues. A special form of traditional entertainment is Water Puppetry and draws large crowds, comprising of both Vietnamese and international tourists. Apart from being famous for its cuisine, restaurants and cafes, Hanoi is also an important centre of education, not just in Vietnam but all of the south-east Asia.

Best street food in Hanoi

Hanoi is a city of foodies and everyone will ask you what you have tried. The capital serves up local cuisine that is unique and incredibly tasty. Anthony Bourdain put Vietnam down as his top place in the world for food and Hanoi is the pinnacle of this foodie heaven.

It isn’t as easy for vegetarians but there are still lots of places where you can try great local dishes which aren’t meaty.

Are you heading to Vietnam? After the first stop is Hanoi, you can easily make trips like Halong Sapa from Hanoi. let's go!
